President Xi Jinping hosted a welcome ceremony for the Republic of Korea President Moon Jae-in on Thursday in Beijing.
Moon's first state visit to China comes amid escalating tensions over Pyongyang's nuclear and missile program as well as indications of improving Beijing-Seoul ties.
Earlier reports said Moon is expected to discuss with Xi ways to peacefully resolve Pyongyang's nuclear issue and ensure peace on the peninsula.
It will be their third meeting. They previously met on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in July and at the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in November.
The four-day visit, starting Wednesday, will also take Moon to the southwestern city of Chongqing.
