Retired English teacher gives free lessons for rural kids
Liu Xiaosheng, 69, a retired English teacher from a university in southwest China's Chongqing, has provided free English classes for rural kids since 2013 while staying at a summer home in a village of neighboring Guizhou province.
Every morning and evening, about 30 students from the village gather on a ground in front of a farmhouse and wait for Liu's classes.
Every year, he teaches seven hours a day for 28 days. He divides the children into two classes according to their ages. The class for middle students has two sessions a day.
In the beginning, some farmers asked Liu if he had time to tutor their children during the summer vacation. But the retired teacher decided to open free English classes for all students.
"The schools in rural areas lack qualified English teachers," he said. "I wish I can offer some help to the students and inspire them to study English well."
Liu's deeds have earned him a lot of respect and praise from the public.
"I will keep teaching them English every summer as long as my health allows me," he said.
