To protect Mount Qomolangma's environment, the Tibet autonomous region sports bureau will introduce a mountaineering garbage management regulation this year.

According to officials of the bureau, in 2018, the autonomous region carried out three large-scale mountaineering garbage collection actions, which collected 8.4 tons of various kinds of garbage left on the mountain by climbers. Meanwhile, Tibet has established a Himalaya high altitude mountaineering environment protection fund, which is expected to ensure the high quality development of mountaineering environment protection according to the garbage management regulation.

In addition, the bureau will carry out a remains settlement action for Qomolangma high altitude mountaineering victims in April and May.

On Dec 5, 2018, the Qomolangma administration in Dingri county, Shigatse, Tibet autonomous region, has issued a document that banned ordinary tourists from entering the core zone of Mount Qomolangma National Nature Reserve above Rongpo Monastery, around 5,000 meters above sea level. To better protect the environment of the world's highest mountain, the highest position that tourists can reach is now 2 kilometers from the Mount Qomolangma base camp.

Moreover, since 2018, climbers can only climb Mount Qomolangma during the spring, and the number of Mount Qomolangma climbers has been reduced to 300 every year.
