'One country, two systems' will benefit Taiwan compatriots: spokesperson

BEIJING - A Chinese mainland spokesperson said on Wednesday that "one country, two systems" will surely bring Taiwan compatriots greater development opportunities and better living conditions.
"It is our basic principle in resolving the Taiwan question and the best approach to realizing national reunification," said An Fengshan, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council at a press conference.
Taiwan will be guaranteed lasting peace after peaceful reunification, said An, adding that with a strong motherland to rely on, Taiwan compatriots will enjoy better living conditions, have more room for development, more confidence and more dignity in the international arena.
On the basis of ensuring the country's sovereignty, security and development interests, the social system and way of life in Taiwan will be fully respected, and the private property, religious beliefs and legitimate rights and interests of Taiwan compatriots will be fully protected after peaceful reunification is realized, said An.
In response to the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration's objection to suggestions for cross-Strait peace agreements, An said the DPP administration ignores the aspirations of the Taiwan public for the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and their obstructions will only harm the vital interests of the Taiwan compatriots and destroy the future of Taiwan.
