NEW YORK - Tokyo Olympic Games gold medalist Belinda Bencic defeated last year's French Open champion Iga Swiatek of Poland 7-6 (12), 6-3 in the fourth round of the US Open women's singles on Monday.
Swiss Bencic experienced a lengthy first-set tiebreaker before taking the rest of the game smoothly.
"I'm not so happy with the way I played today, but I'm happy I'm through," Bencic said on court with characteristic humility following the victory.
Bencic will next play British youngster Emma Raducanu in the quarterfinals.
