Fishing boats set sail on Wednesday from Zhapo port in Yangjiang, Guangdong province. A fleet of around 900 boats began the journey at noon as a three-and-a-half-month fishing moratorium in the South China Sea ended. Fishermen in other coastal cities, including those in Hainan province and the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, also restarted fishing activities. China has been imposing the annual ban in the South China Sea since 1999 to promote sustainable marine fishery development and improve marine ecology. CHEN JIMIN/CHINA NEWS SERVICE
