Mainly found in Hami prefecture, Uygur embroidery is rooted in Islamic civilization and inspired by the Han, Manchu and Buddhist cultures. Almost every Uygur girl masters this craft to adorn their daily supplies when they are getting married. The finest expression of their ethnic features can be found on the patterns of their doppas, pillows, and clothes.

Many techniques make up this art. Its essence, from the Beijing and Suzhou embroidery schools, includes flat, knotted, crouching and cross stitches as well as stamped embroidery. The Hami Uygur embroidery school offers a great perspective to research the diverse Uygur cultures, and boasts high academic value.
