Chuanyi Moxie, an exhibition at Beijing's Art Museum of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, is a collection of copies of classic paintings and drawings by teachers and students made over the course of several generations at CAFA. [Photo provided to chinadaily.com.cn]

The great paintings and artists copied include some whose names have been immortalized, such as Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) artist Wu Zhen and Bada Shanren, the seclusive 17th century monk. Pieces replicated year-after-year include the Dunhuang murals in Gansu province, which are the work of unknown artists.

Copying the work of the great artists of the past was a tradition in classic Chinese painting, and continues today. It is a process through which students learn to master techniques, comprehend the perspectives of ancient people on nature and social change, and explore innovative methods of creation.
