UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 24 -- China supports building a more effective and pragmatic United Nations through reform efforts to enhance its quality and performance, said Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Wednesday.

Li made the remarks in his meeting with Annalena Baerbock, president of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), on the sidelines of the UNGA general debate.

He also expressed China's firm commitment to upholding the authority and the role of the United Nations.

As the world has entered into a new period of turbulence and transformation with mounting instability and uncertainty, the role of the United Nations has become increasingly crucial, said Li.

Noting that Chinese President Xi Jinping has solemnly put forward the Global Governance Initiative recently, Li said the move aims to support the United Nations in playing its due role in global affairs and encourage countries to work more closely and better cope with the challenges of the times via the United Nations and other multilateral mechanisms.

China stands ready to enhance coordination and communication with the United Nations and all parties involved in a joint effort to implement the Global Governance Initiative, push for building a more just and equitable global governance system, and work towards a community with a shared future for humanity, said the Chinese premier.

Li called on the United Nations to make advances in all the three pillar areas of peace, development and human rights in a balanced manner, and focus more on the development agenda.

He said the United Nations should enhance global governance in emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, cyberspace, the polar regions and outer space, while taking into account the legitimate propositions and demands of the vast number of developing countries.

Noting the Taiwan question is at the core of China's core interests, Li said that China believes Baerbock and the United Nations will continue to uphold the one-China principle.

For her part, Baerbock said China has always been a firm and strong supporter of the United Nations and has played a leading role in promoting global development and addressing global challenges.

The four global initiatives proposed by President Xi are highly consistent with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, she said, voicing hope of working with China around the theme of this year's UNGA -- "Better together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights" -- to deepen cooperation in the three pillars, especially in the field of development and jointly advance the cause of world peace and development.

As UNGA Resolution 2758 is unambiguous, Baerbock said, the 80th session of the UNGA will firmly adhere to the one-China principle.
