China and Canada agreed to restart exchanges and cooperation in various areas, work toward addressing each other's specific economic and trade concerns, and jointly advance the strategic partnership, as President Xi Jinping met on Friday with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Xi noted that thanks to joint efforts, China-Canada relations have shown positive momentum of recovery and improvement, which serves the shared interests of both countries.

China stands ready to work with Canada to take this meeting as an opportunity to bring bilateral ties back onto the right track of sound, steady and sustainable development at an early date to better benefit the two peoples, he added.

He stressed that both sides should foster objective and rational perceptions of each other, adhere to mutual benefit and win-win cooperation, expand practical cooperation in areas such as the economy, trade and energy, and enhance people-to-people exchanges.

Xi also called for strengthening coordination and cooperation in multilateral frameworks such as the United Nations, jointly promoting a more just and equitable global governance system, and safeguarding international fairness and justice.

Carney told Xi that the new Canadian government attaches great importance to its relations with China, and looks forward to resuming cooperation and advancing bilateral ties in a pragmatic and constructive manner to achieve more outcomes.

Canada is ready to maintain close high-level exchanges with China, advance cooperation in areas such as agriculture, energy and climate change, jointly practice multilateralism and uphold free trade, he added.
