1,000 tourists evacuated after C China landslides

(Xinhua) Updated: 2012-05-02 15:30

WUHAN - More than 1,000 tourists were evacuated early Wednesday after being stranded for nearly two days on a central China highway by rain-triggered landslides, local authorities said.

The tourists were stranded at about 2 pm Monday after a massive landslide occurred on State Highway 209 near the Shennongjia forestry resort in Hubei province, the resort's administrators said in a press release.

Another landslide hit the same location on Tuesday afternoon, cutting traffic on a highway that runs from Hohhot, capital of north China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region, to Beihai in the southern Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, the document said.

The press release said no casualties have been reported.

Most of the tourists took shelter at the Shennongjia forestry resort and were given food and water while road workers cleared the rubble and fixed the road.

Road work was completed at around 3 am Wednesday and all the tourists were evacuated.

Shennongjia, a major tourist attraction, is also the supposed home of the "yeren," an elusive Bigfoot-like creature.
