By TANG ZHE | chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2013-07-01 20:11

Tsinghua University mountaineers will attempt to conquer Tuanjie Peak, the highest point of the Qilian Mountains, this month.

The peak, 5,826 meters above sea level, is located in Tianjun county, Qinghai province, and is snow covered.

All 13 members of the mountaineering team, including three females, are amateur climbers and they set off from Beijing on Monday.

They will start their mission from July 4 to 15.

Based on a reconnaissance in May last year, the climbers will attempt a new route to the summit from the north face of the main ridge of Qilian Mountains.

The team will be divided into three groups. Four members of Group A will attempt to conquer the peak, and the other two groups will provide support.

Tsinghua's mountaineering team was established in 1992, and was incorporated into tthe Tsinghua Climbing Association in 1994.

The association organizes at least one major climb every year.

The team has conquered more than 10 snow-capped peaks .
