China opposes US lawmakers' meeting with Dalai

(Xinhua) Updated: 2014-03-07 21:42

BEIJING -- China on Friday voiced strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to some United States lawmakers' meeting with Dalai Lama.

"We urge the US Congress to honor their commitment that recognizes Tibet as part of China and does not support the so-called 'Tibet independence,'" Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said at a press briefing.

"According to Dalai's words and deeds in the last decades, it's clear that he is a political exile who has been engaged in secessionist activities under the cloak of religion," Qin said.

He urged the US Congress to stop interfering in China's internal affairs via the Tibet issue, and to stop conniving with or even supporting the anti-China secessionist activities conducted by some "Tibet independence" forces.

Dalai met last month with US President Barack Obama and returned to Washington to deliver the customary prayer that opens each Senate session on Thursday, before meeting congressional leaders and top senators.
