China declares war on pollution for environment day

By Wu Wencong (chinadaily.com.cn) Updated: 2014-04-15 14:57

"Declaring war on pollution" will be the Chinese theme for the 2014 World Environment Day, which is on June 5, the Environmental Protection Ministry announced on Tuesday.

The targeted pollution include airborne, water pollution, soil pollution, heavy metal, chemical and hazardous waste pollution, and pollution caused by industries.

The theme has been decided based on several considerations, the ministry said. First is to show that the government makes managing pollution a high priority and acknowledges its responsibility to address the issue. Second is to actively respond to the public on hot environmental topics such as smog and haze. Third is to declare the Chinese government's firm determination and iron will to deal with such problems. Fourth is to encourage all of society, including all levels of government bodies, companies and residents, to work together to battle pollution.

The international theme for 2014 World Environment Day is, "Raise your voice, not the sea level", the United Nations Environment Programme announced recently. Featuring small island developing states as its main beneficiaries, the theme aims to help protect such islands from growing risks and vulnerabilities, particularly as a result of climate change.
