Shanghai tops public transportation ranking

Shanghai and Xiamen, Fujian province, have been ranked as the most developed and convenient cities for public transportation, according to a report issued by amap.com on Tuesday.

Twenty cities were evaluated based on factors such as the number of bus stops and subway stations, trip costs, the total number of bus and subway lines and the density of the public transportation network.

Shenzhen in Guangdong province took third place in the rankings while Beijing was ranked sixth. Chongqing came in last, according to the Public Transport Report of Major Chinese Cities in the First Half of 2016, compiled by amap.com, a digital map, navigation, and location service solution provider in China.

Shanghai boasts the most developed metro system with the highest density and total length, and it also has the most convenient distribution of bus stops. According to the report, 73 percent of Shanghai's residents are within 1 km of a bus stop, which compares with 64 percent in Beijing and just 5 percent for Chongqing.

Public transportation in Xiamen had the absolute price advantage. A bus ride less than 20 km costs 1 yuan ($0.15) and a longer one costs 2 yuan at most. Residents using the city's public transportation card can get a further 20 percent off. In Shanghai, the starting fare for a bus ride is 2 yuan.
