China calls for end to Myanmar conflict

By Wang Qingyun | chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2017-03-07 20:24

China is "watching closely" the military conflict in northern Myanmar and has called for an immediate ceasefire.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said on Tuesday that the situation in northern Myanmar effects the peace on the border area of China and Myanmar, and parties involved in the conflict should restore normal order as soon as possible.

"China supports all measures that are conducive to peace. All relevant parties should stick to peacefully solving differences through dialogue and consultation," he said, adding that he has not received any reports of Chinese citizens being among the casualties of the conflict.

Armed clashes broke out before dawn on Monday in Laukkai, the capital of Kokang region in Myanmar's northern Shan state. Kokang's Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army launched an offensive on Laukkai, resulting in dozens of casualties including civilians, Xinhua reported.

Geng said China has provided proper accommodation and help to Myanmar citizens living in the border area who have fled due to the conflict.
