Driverless cars finding route to future

By Meng Jing | China Daily | Updated: 2014-08-19 06:51

With cameras acting as eyes, radars sensing barricades, and with GPS, navigation equipment and computers monitoring positions and giving directions, five driverless cars developed by Chinese universities and research institutions slowly but smoothly completed a 200-meter ring in Beijing on Monday.

The autonomous driving industry is in its infancy in China, but experts and insiders said the country is likely to take the lead in the next-generation driving technology due to the strong desire to ease traffic congestion and improve driving safety.

Yu Kai, head of the Institute of Deep Learning at Baidu, said during the showcase of driverless cars that China's advantages lie in its demand side.
