American actress Chloe Grace Moretz will be the next little mermaid in Universal's upcoming live-action movie.

According to Variety, the Carrie actor is set to play the main actor, the little mermaid, in the project, an adaption of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale that also served as inspiration for the quite different Disney film.

Moretz, who has steadily risen to fame with roles in films like Hugo and Dark Shadows is currently filming Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising.

In the sequel to the 2014 picture Neighbors, the 18-year-old will reportedly play a sorority girl.

Moretz's turn in The Little Mermaid could end up being a real departure from her bound-to-be silly Neighbors role, as Andersen's classic fairy tale is much darker in tone than the Disney tale we've come to know and love.
