A U.S.-Russian crew blasted off from Kazakhstan to the International Space Station (ISS) on Friday to relieve the team manning the outpost and spend a daunting six months in orbit.

"The launch went off without a hitch and according to schedule," said a spokesman for mission control in Moscow after the rocket carrying a Soyuz TMA-6 capsule lifted off at 8:46 p.m. EDT Thursday and began a two-day flight to the ISS.
