Magnitude 5 earthquake shakes New Zealand capital
(AP)
Updated: 2005-12-13 11:58

A magnitude five earthquake rocked Wellington early Tuesday, New Zealand's Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences reported.

There were no reports of major damage or injuries.

The quake, whose epicenter on North Island was about 140 kilometers (90 miles) northeast of Wellington, was felt in the capital as a slow, rocking motion just before 3 a.m. (1400 GMT).

New Zealand experiences around 14,000 quakes each year, according to the institute, but most are too slight or too deep to be widely felt.
