首先，我們來談談cold turky,你可別認為它是“涼火雞”的意思。早在1930年的時候，cold turkey作為形容詞、副詞和名詞都被人們使用過。當時作為形容詞的用法較常見，意思是 “blunt, frank, plain”（生硬的、坦率的、毫無修飾的）?！睹咳招侣劇?Daily News)上曾有這樣的句子: "Stalin didn't like certain cold-turkey facts Kennan reported about Russia." 這里 “cold-turkey facts ”的意思是“生硬的事實”。
Cold turkey作副詞用作狀語時的意思是 “即興、沒有任何準備”或“率直地、坦然地”。Carl Sandburg在1922年這樣寫到: "I'm going to talk cold turkey with booksellers about the hot gravy in the stories."
關于talk （cold）turkey 的起源有一種說法是，一個白人和一印第安人商量如何分配捕獲的獵物。白人說："You take the turkey and I'll take the crow，or I'll take the turkey and you take the crow". 而印第安人覺察出白人并不是在“ talking turkey”(說心里話)，白人其實正盤算著如何將獵物全部占為己有。
至于作為名詞的用法，cold turkey的意思是“說話、做事直截了當”。 "Let's get down to cold turkey." 最能體現(xiàn)這種用法，它的意思就是"Let's get down to business." (談正經(jīng)事，切入正題)。
