Made-in-Anhui cartoon takes off
Updated: 2013-03-15

A Chinese cartoon series starring two bears has made such a big splash that scores of foreign broadcasters including Disney Junior have bought its copyright.

The 104-episode Bonnie Bears, created by an animation company in Wuhu of East China's Anhui province, depicts how the bear brothers keep an invader nicknamed "Bareheaded Qiang" from destroying their forest.

The show premiered on China Central Television (CCTV) Children's Channel during the Chinese Lunar New Year with a 3.85 rating, making it the most-watched cartoon ever since the channel was launched in 2003.

The animation series was also exported to dozens of countries such as the United States, Italy and Russia. It's worthy to note that under a copyright contract, Disney Junior, the renowned US television network for kids, is set to air the cartoon, Li Bin, managing director of the Wuhu Huaqiang Digital Animation Co, said.

Many factors have contributed to its success, including various marketing campaigns. The manager, however, believed the popularity of the cartoon was largely fueled by its theme, saying that it touched on some real world problems, which appealed to both children and grown-ups.
