Wang Beilei, a Taiwan resident who runs a restaurant in Pingtan, prepared zongzi for people in Pingtan – the closest mainland county to Taiwan - during the Dragon Boat Festival last Tuesday.

Zongzi, also known as sticky rice dumplings, is a traditional Chinese food made of glutinous rice stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in bamboo, reed, or other large flat leaves.

Eating zongzi is a Chinese tradition during the Dragon Boat Festival, which fell on June 12 this year. The festival is also called the Duanwu Festival, and is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month, according to the Chinese lunar calendar.

Pingtan residents, however, traditionally make pancakes to celebrate the festival, and Wang said that this motivated her to make them zongzi containing special flavors from Taiwan.
