Old soldiers who fought for our survival deserve gratitude

chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2013-07-04 20:15

Kuomintang soldiers who fought in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression are now eligible for social welfare. Better late than never, said an article in Beijing Times (excerpts below).

How should we treat those who fought for our nation's survival? The Ministry of Civil Affairs recently gave an excellent answer by allowing them to get welfare.

Better late than never.

Actually, in 1983, there was a document that defined Kuomintang soldiers and other patriots who sacrificed their lives in certain wars as martyrs. The descendants of several Kuomintang officers were recently given honorary certificates.

The Ministry of Civil Affairs made a huge move forward by giving welfare. But more can be done. The old soldiers fought for us more than 60 years ago and it is time we paid our respect to them.
