SINGAPORE - The opening round of the $5 million Singapore Open was suspended at midday on Thursday amid torrential rain and the threat of lightning at Sentosa Golf Club.

Singapore's own Lam Chih-bing was the early leader at the Serapong course on four under par after 13 holes, with China's Zhang Lian-wei among five players three strokes further back.

American Phil Mickelson, who recently lost his world number two spot to Spain's Sergio Garcia, was at two over after 15 holes.

Garcia grabbed the no. 2 ranking after winning the HSBC Champions tournament in Shanghai, which was also hit by inclement weather and took five days to complete.

The Singapore Open, won last year by Argentina's Angel Cabrera, is Asia's richest national Open and is sanctioned by the Asian Tour.
