Repurposing old homes is merely the first step in Ji's plans. He believes that the typically slow village life can be made more colorful and energetic to attract a greater number of visitors from the city, which would in turn provide business for the villagers.

Statistics from the Deqing's local government show that the county has generated more than 3,500 job opportunities as well as more than 10,000 job positions in the transportation and retail sectors since it opened the county to tourism about eight years ago.

A Shanghai interior designer who followed in their footsteps is 36-year-old Yu Wei. He headed to the Moganshan Mountains in Deqing county with his wife to build their dream home, part of which they have converted into a hostel.

Named Yun Xi Shang, this boutique hostel opened four months ago. Speaking of his move, Yu says he is enjoying life in the village.
