Egypt's culture minister resigns over police aggression

Xinhua | Updated: 2013-02-05 03:57

CAIRO - Egyptian Culture Minister Mohamed Saber submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Hesham Qandil, but it has not been accepted yet, official news agency MENA reported Monday.

The minister has resigned Sunday evening as he was depressed after police were filmed beating up and stripping a protester on Friday outside the presidential palace in Cairo, state-run al- Ahram newspaper quoted an official source as saying.

A wave of public anger was triggered against the Egyptian police after local TV channels repeatedly aired the video of the police abuse.

In a statement issued Friday, the presidency held some political forces responsible for the clashes.

In response, the main opposition bloc, the National Salvation Front (NSF), denounced the recent incidents, criticizing President Mohamed Morsi and his interior minister and urging further protests to topple the country's leadership.
