Xinjiang launches new power line, boosting green energy transport

Construction began on Sept 19 on the Ruoqiang–Lingyang 750 kV power transmission project, the third alternating-current channel in the "Xinjiang Power Export" system. Once finished, it will complete the "three AC, three DC" transmission pattern, strengthening the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region's ability to supply electricity nationwide.
The project is part of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021–25) for power development and is classified as a major interprovincial grid initiative. The line starts from the Ruoqiang substation in Xinjiang, runs through the under-construction Qiman substation, and ends at the Lingyang substation in Mangya, Qinghai.
With a dynamic investment of 3.13 billion yuan ($440 million), the double-circuit line stretches about 723 kilometers, including 486 kilometers in Xinjiang and 1,054 steel towers. Roughly 40 kilometers cross the remote Altun Mountains.
According to Chu Zhongkai, deputy head of the first project management center in State Grid Xinjiang Electric Power, the route was adjusted to bypass the Lop Nur Wild Camel National Nature Reserve. "The final route adds 4 kilometers and increases investment by 16.4 million yuan. Selecting tower locations outside environmentally sensitive areas, such as the Lop Nur Wild Camel Reserve, minimizes ecological disruption."
When completed, the project will boost the Northwest China power grid's ability to absorb renewable energy, balance resources, and enhance overall efficiency.
