Stars should use fame well

(China Daily) Updated: 2015-02-06 07:56

Celebrities should focus their energy on the creation of valuable cultural and artistic works rather than use their status to pursue commercial interests or illegal gains, says a People's Daily article.

Cultural figures usually enjoy more opportunities to gain popularity than ordinary people and once they are favored by a number of fans their popularity usually snowballs. Such kind of popularity often brings them more convenience in their daily lives, and some rich people and officials even voluntarily approach or curry favor with them.

After gaining such kind of popularity, cultural celebrities should ponder how to properly use their influence. This is related to their moral integrity. Some have chosen to use their fame to devote themselves to public services, advertising or collecting money for charities to transmit positive energy to society. Some have chosen to regard themselves as part of the ordinary public, reject "specific cares" and even donate their lifelong savings to the country.

However, there are also some who have abused their influence for personal benefit. These celebrities have capitalized on their fame as a means to approach power and money and even provide a bridge for dirty deals trading power for money. If they are obsessed with money, there is no possibility for celebrities to create excellent cultural works.

Public cultural figures should refrain from using their fame as a shortcut to special interests, a stepping stone to malpractices or even an umbrella for corruption and crimes.
